Dear Friends,
As you may see from this site, we are working this year with Friends, Attenders, Monthly and Quarterly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and others with shared interests, throughout California, Nevada, Hawaii and Mexico, or beyond, to develop a shared framework to guide us in discernment and action as we respond with ever greater urgency to the planetary crisis now upon us. The working title of this framework is Faith in Our Future. The initial coordination, research, drafts and supporting resources, all to be found on this site, have been prepared under the leadings of the Unity with Nature Committee (UwN) of the Pacific Yearly Meeting (PacYM).
Now, as we release this website onto the internet, we are moving into a new phase of this unfolding work, happily opening the site and its pages to your suggestions or additions to the knowledge base we're assembling to draw from for this site as it develops. And if you feel called to help further in this work, we'd love to explore this with you.
We anticipate that the draft Framework itself will be available for your comments and feedback by April of 2023. This draft will then be posted on this website, easily accessed with an identified button on the home page. If you have given us your email address on the form above, we will send the draft Framework to you directly when it is ready to share. Meanwhile, our UwN Committee intends to meet directly with as many of Pac YM's 32 Monthly Meetings as possible over the coming year to find out what each is doing, learning, or seeking discernment about, for input as to how the UwN committee can be of most help, and specifically to consider the draft Framework.
Meanwhile, we invite you as individual Quakers and attenders, or among any of the "climate concerned," to reach out to our UwN committee via the box above with comments about this website or related matters. For starters, we invite you to review Moving Together in the Face of Climate Change, a strategic plan adopted in the summer of 2021 by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (PYM) after a year or more of preparatory work. Reading it ourselves in, the UwN committee felt it was just the inspiration we needed to begin a similar process. We began by previewing some of the parts of the Philadelphia plan, along with our own inspiration, in interest group sessions at the 2022 Pacific Yearly Meeting annual session. Since then we've been working on this site, and alongside it, the draft Framework itself.
This UwN website is only partially complete, but we are putting it out now with our hope that what you can already find here will be of real use to Pac YM Friends and others, and that you'll let us know, as you can, what's working for you or your Meeting and, of course, what isn't. As you peruse this site, we welcome your feedback and suggestions via the email box above or with a phone call or email. And, above all, please share with us stories of your own work, or that of others you are finding of particular value, especially any that made some use of this site in its undertaking. These stories as we share them are the life of this work, keeping each of us encouraged and engaged and growing our relationships over the long haul.
With deep reverence for all of Creation,
The Unity with Nature Committee of the Pacific Yearly
Meeting (PacYM) of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
Suellen Lowry, Humboldt (Co-clerk)
Keith Runyan, Santa Cruz (Co-clerk)
Paty Constantino, Mexico City
Michael Dunn, Inland Valley
Klara East, Sacramento
Marge Gianelli, La Jolla
Nancy Glock-Grueneich, Santa Cruz
Billie Hamilton, Sacramento
Ragni Larsen-Orta, Strawberry Creek
