"Given the right inward state, right action is inevitable."
~ Howard Brinton
preparing ourselves for the work
While there is much about climate change that is beyond our individual control, what we can do is cultivate the inner resources needed in this time of spiritual challenge. We can choose to expand our capacity to be of service, respond with love, and take joy in the precious life we've been given. That is the inner work that is fundamental to all else we may be led to do. And in doing our own inner work, we open more fully to what Spirit is calling upon us to do, becoming a more loving and effective resource for the work that is needed.
What strengthens us in this time of uncertainty? How are we to co-create hope and meaningful action from the wellspring of love and curiosity?
“In the practice of conscious love you begin to discover… a hope that is related not to outcome but to a wellspring… a source of strength that wells up from deep within you independent of all outcomes… it is a hope that can never be taken away from you because it is love itself working in you conferring the strength to stay present…”
Cynthia Bourgeault in Love is Stronger Than Death
To co-create active hope we can turn to curiosity, connection, and caring—all capacities that move us to right action—and out of which come both courage and hope, which empower us to act, against even long odds.

To co-create active hope we can turn to curiosity, connection, and caring—all capacities that move us to right action—and out of which come both courage and hope, which empower us to act, against even long odds.
- Curiosity turns fear into a messenger telling us, “Here is something important. Focus. Become interested. Explore.”
- Connection lets us know that we are not alone, which is important because we cannot deal with this crisis as isolated individuals. Connection also reaches outward, connecting what we are already doing to the larger vision, and even further to new understandings of our embeddedness in the natural order, and not only to “our own kind” but to all kinds, all of existence Thus we connect with new people, new groups, new information and new possibilities as we participate in Life itself, working with it, to co-create a future that not only allows us to survive but one we can truly embrace.
- Caring takes us into the deep wellspring of love that will bring us the passion we need to energize us in the commitment for the long haul’
- Courage , then, is born out of curiosity, connection and caring—and in service of Spirit, led by and empowered by Spirit—liberates our power to act, even in these times, coping with what we’ve never faced before.
- Hope, then comes alive, not merely a feeling, but a new reality that we create through our caring, our connections, and our actions.
An excellent documentary on inner climate change work
INNER CLIMATE CHANGE is a Findhorn Foundation production inspired by the people who participated in the April 2019 Climate Change and Consciousness conference held at the Findhorn Foundation, Scotland. The one-hour film weaves a touching and often intimate narrative from their personal insights and resolutions in the face of inner and outer climate change.
