The Compass -- Getting Our Bearings
If you can't name your goal, you're unlikely to achieve it.

To act to best effect, we need a clear enough idea of where we need to get to--that we are indeed aiming for the right outcomes--and can gauge when we're headed in the right direction. But, where can we get that sense of direction? Or even that belief that our actions, taken together, could get us there?
Our answer here, the one behind this website, is that we may get much of our sense of direction and our belief that what we seek is indeed possible, by finding the most promising of the myriad solutions now emerging within and between every sector of society,
from all parts of the world, and at all levels of scale--and putting them together. The result is not only hope for a future that we can all live with--but a map for getting there.

The model below was developed by PacYM Friend Nancy Glock-Grueneich as a visual synthesis of such emerging solutions that, taken together and at scale, would take us toward the health we, our society, and our planet need.

First: The four blue "cornerstones" on the compass are the near term outcomes that we must achieve as soon as possible if we as a species, and "all our relations"-- all of life on earth--are to survive.  We must first stop the harm we continue to inflict on our Earth; we must save one another as climate chaos wreaks havoc across the globe; we must change our over-consumptive, fossil fuel-intensive lifestyles; and finally, we must heal the planet with rewilding and regenerative solutions such as those put forth by Project Regeneration (link below).

Second: Around the eight sides of the compass are the systems shifts in each of the sectors that we need. They symbolize the new ways that each of the key functions of our society could, in time, come to operate. This is the world we might now achieve if we can find the global will to institutionalize the many beneficial transformations already underway.

Third: The three items in the center, "1", "2" and "3" are the three conditions that we have named as together defining a truly livable future. These are aspirational as the ends in view, the ends we serve, a distillation of our testimonies as Friends: (1) Meeting the basic needs of all; (2) "Answering that of God" in each other and in all life, with customs and institutions that tend to bring out the best in each other; and (3) True justice and liberty such that power is used only to serve life, not the other way around.
